Codeine Porn

if you’ve talked to me in the last 5 years, you’ve probably heard me scream about codeine. i’m glad to find this definitive, goshdarn thorough fan site, replete with their always-cool artwork and an excellent discography. check the peel sessions in the ‘radio‘ section. it’s pretty slow loading, but what’s your rush? you will enjoy if you like slint, or if you like godspeed, low and all that latter-day slow-blah.*

this band featured chris brokaw, sometimes david grubbs, and, later, june of 44’s doug scharin. a personal highlight of ’06 was conversing with jeff mueller (june of 44, rodan) about codeine, and watching him get as dorked up as me about ’em.

how didn’t i know that there’s a codeine/bitch magnet split? and where’s the bitch magnet fan site for chrissakes?

* godspeed’s fine. actually, i have a prohibition in place against this line of music blather:

“oh, you like band a? that’s cool, but you should really check out band b if you’re into that crap. cuz, like, band b’s the real shit. band a totally just took their sound and added drum machines, and that’s why they’re huge now. and cuz nobody was around when those first, great band a seven-inches hit the streets. god those were great times.”

(i know plenty of teenagers/anthropologists for whom that argument/outlook is appropriate/inevitable. i construct endless flow charts, hierarchies and taxonomies related to records, but that’s my own problem, and certainly not anything i’d wanna claim as ‘expertise,’ or unleash on civilians. bands have influences and all that, but often i hear talk of precedents, origins and ‘ripoffs’ functioning as a backdoor claim to one high ground or another. this is all a direct outcome of too much time spent with sickening ideas of ‘authenticity,’ ‘purity’ and other essentialisms in my own disciplinary backyard; thus, i try to assert the ‘real thing’ blah-blah only when it helps me mock dave.)
