5 Easy PhDs

1) Socialist Ideology among state workers in Conteporary Vietnam

2) Indigenous Rights and Social Science in the South Pacific

3) Self and Citizenship in Northern Ireland/Ulster

3) Political Identity and Political Modernity  in Guadeloupe

5) Tax politics and the state of the state.

Part of my problem in academia gets back to being a little too academic in my choice of projects. I formalized my new Ph.D. plan today amidst a sea of pretense and pomp from unrelated sources. Too academic for academia, but just ridiculous enough for the labor movement (in Oregon), I’ll trudge on and try to avoid mirrors for a while.  Teaching’s the only thing that feels quite right, but both academia and labor want more than that from me.  Too bad I’m too hooked on DirectTV to downshift to a barista job; too bad I’m too experienced, I hope, for primitivist panaceas of the simple life.  Only a teenager’d think there’s anything simple about living on $7/hour, aywho.

Did I mention that today sucks? At least I’m not Eliot Spitzer.

    Pat,

You’d be surprised how easy it is to go back to being underpaid/overeducated. I got promoted at the bike shop to head mechanic, and while I’m making about half of what I made at the consulting firm. I am probably the happiest I’ve ever been with my work situation.

What I love about it is that I’m not so psychologically exhausted from the day that I have to resort to Direct TV or any other mind numbing substance to focus on what’s important to me.

I read a lot and am actually thinking about starting to turn my undergraduate thesis into a book possibly. It’s really nice to have the freedom to pull that off. Do you feel like teaching makes you feel overworked with the PHD bit? What is it like to teach, I’m kind of scared of it.

I think that Paddy Padrick should spend a year as a standup comic.
    Any backers?

I thought for sure there would be a post about our wussy congress and their decisions of late. Isn’t weird that Barack, H-bomb, and his excellency Mr. John “Maverick” McCain were in it together with the earmark thing, but almost no one else was? (especially the shameful dems)
