Mankell, Mozambique

Sarah Weinman’s crime fiction blog reports that Henning Mankell has given the equivalent of USD 2.5million to the construction of shelters for orphans in Mozambique.  A patron saint of Dan Jones and me, as well as the subject of a ridiculously laudatory piece by Slajov Zizek….Mankell’s Kurt Wallander novels sit with Ken Bruen and Ellroy in the “this is so much more than a genre novel” canon.  Just as Wallander finds himself plagued by quotidian discomforts and unnameable acts, the abject violence of the Global South haunts Mankell’s depictions of Sweden’s crumbling, socialist facade….Yeah, that was a really pretentious sentence but I’m supposed to be working over here. Mankell is real cool, I mean to say.
