“With a musty vintage charm and spiky sense of humor this Montreal-based guitar punk band is– along with Icky Thump, Black Lips, Jay Reatard, and the solo work of King Khan collaborator Mark Sultan– breathing life back into good old fashioned rock’n’roll.”
i have no idea about this band in particular… but i loathe this moment in which it’s assumed that a buncha people need to be reminded that rock rocks. if they haven’t ever listened to aerosmith, that’s their problem.
i’ve always been less than enthusiastic about the whole rockist garage thing, really only digging on bands like dead moon, the oblivians et. al. that i simply couldn’t not dig…to me, that whole “rock and roll true believer” fundamentalism is as put-on and pretentious as any joan of arc record, say. but this trend’s going mass market really chafes.
the only thing worse than this sort of punk-ish, rockist historical re-enactment shit is when you stir in some sort of “roots” vibe. that’s when i reach for rob’s revolver.
