dear jawn

damn. i’m watching the debate on CNN right now – i do hope you are, too – and edwards just pissed me off. he called Hillary ‘Hillary’ and Obama ‘Senator Obama.’ it’s probably because he felt weird about saying “Barack” – which is gross enough, if you think about it – but it also could imply that he sees HRC as a (diminuitive) woman, and Obama as a leader. in other words, he felt entitled to act more casually with the one woman on the stage.

it will be interesting to see how the pundits call this one. i think that hillary came off as ‘states(wo)man-like,’ but that’s not my litmus test. obama did well after a terrible, blustering first answer. richardson seemed much better then he was on meet the press last week. as for jawn, ah…

If you’re willing to go there. Her PR gurus have clearly decided to go with “Hillary!” as their branding theme, quite consciously, I think. It’s an attempt to convey some sort of familiarity – tapping into what, I’m not sure.

I could be wrong, but she may have embraced the diminuitive familiarity with which she was bound to be saddled. Although it doesn’t excuse Edwards from assuming it was ok to address her as such. Who knows, he might just be very susceptible to Hillary!’s message.

Is any of this ‘fly-by-the-seat-you-pants? I don’t think so. There is a script, may the best public speaker with the most money win.
